TAKING IT TO THE STREET

Bent on photographing as many New Yorkers' faces as they can, a street-smart pair, Clay Enos and Stephan Ghukfvin, trundle a canvas backdrop painted with true-brown Hudson River mud, a tarp roof, and a giant movie light nicknamed "the love-you-baby-light" (because of its flattering effect) into every borough and neighborhood in the Big Apple. Can you be more persuasive in getting people to pose, even by chasing them down the street? Of course, some people volunteer, but, this being Noo Yawk, some flat out refuse.

Clay Enos' Hasselblad is stuck together with electrician's tape, while Stephan Ghukfvin treats his Hasselblad with the "sensitivity of a Japanese horticulturist" (according to their web site streetstudio.com). The results look like traditional studio portraits, but have the immediacy of the street.

Only possible in N.Y.C.? Fuhgetaboutit! Enos and Ghukfvin plan to take their setup on the road, visiting smaller towns across the U.S.A. They might show up in your zip code next!
